Glossary
Royalties are payments made to the rights holders when their music gets used. Examples of rights holders could be a recording artist, songwriter, publisher, record label, etc.
An advance is money an artist gets paid up front when they sign a record deal, like a pre-payment of the royalties they may or may not earn. It’s basically a guarantee of the amount of money they are estimated to make and it’s not a loan, so artists aren’t obligated to pay it back.
DSP stands for Digital Service Provider, so any digital retail store like iTunes or streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music or TIDAL would be examples.
For a simplified example of how royalties and advances work, listen to this track.
